BREEDING TERMS

KITS:  Baby bunnies

 

BUCK:  A male rabbit

 

DOE:  A female rabbit

 

JUNIOR:  Less than six months of age

 

SENIOR:  Over six months of age (*in a “4-class” breed)

 

GESTATION:  Period of pregnancy (28 to 32 days in rabbits)

 

KINDLING:  Giving birth

 

LACTATION:  Producing milk to feed the young

 

WEANING:  Removing the mother from the litter, usually around five to eight weeks of age.

 

PALPATE:  To check a doe for pregnancy by feeling for the embryos in the abdomen, usually done around 14 days gestation

 

TRIO:  A set of three  rabbits (one buck and two does) offered for sale as a breeding  set.  The rabbits are usually guaranteed healthy, of good quality, and genetically compatible.  (A good way to start out in any breed.)

 

LINEBREEDING:  Breeding a line of rabbits from a superior ancestor

 

INBREEDING:  Very close matings, such as brother/sister, parent/offspring

 

PEDIGREE:  Written chart of the rabbit’s male and female ancestors  

 

REGISTERED:  The rabbit (and its pedigree) have been found to be of good quality by a licensed registrar and is officially recorded with ARBA.
