"Faulted for stain."  Bummer.  How disappointing to hear the judge give a lower placing to an excellent rabbit just because it has those nasty yellow stains on it's coat.

No matter how clean you keep them, there will always be bucks that insist on spraying everything in sight (including themselves), or does that like to sit up against the urine guards in their potty corner.  What to do??

Everyone has their own solution, or has heard of a solution, but what really works?  We decided to find out once and for all, by putting several methods and products to the test.

Below you'll see "before" and "after" photos, and our rating on a scale of 1 to 10 with comments.  We tested the products on the bottoms of the hind feet.

Note:  DO NOT WASH YOUR JERSEY WOOLY RABBIT!  If you give your Jersey a bath, the underwool will crimp as it dries.  This is similar to a characteristic of Angora wool and a judge can disqualify your Jersey.  Treat stains topically only, trying not to dampen the undercoat.

Cowboy Magic Spot Remover

"Shower in a Bottle"

This product is designed for use on horses to remove grass and manure stains.  Did not dry out the wool.  Advertised safe for animal and human use.  Did a good job of getting the yellow out.

Sprayed on, left set for 90 min.  No rinsing.

Woolite Carpet and Upholstery Pet Stain Eliminator

*Best bet for tough stains on colored rabbits.

Advertised non-toxic and safe for pets.  Smells perfume-y.  Took most of the yellow stain out.  I would spray it on lightly, let it set, then rinse with water and let dry if I used it again.

Saturated stain, left set 90 min.  Our rating:

Nature's Miracle Pet Stain and Odor Remover

Advertised Non-toxic and safe for pets and children. A great product for removing pet stains in carpets, but you have to let it set forever.  Not very helpful for this application.

Saturated stain, left set 90 min. Our Rating:

Peroxide

About $1.00 or less per bottle

The old standard for stain removal on rabbits.   Did a fair job of removing the yellow.  I've been told that the best approach is to spray it on the stain, leave the bunny set in a carrier overnight, and by morning it will be gone.  Can't beat the price.  Non-toxic but could cause burns of the digestive tract, cramping, and nausea.  Be sure the bunny has plenty of water if left overnight.

Tends to dry the coat and make it brittle.

Saturated stain, left set 90 min. Our rating:

Alto Equine Dung Away

Says to apply, rinse, and let dry.  Did a pretty fair job removing stain.  Does not specifically claim non-toxicity, so I would not leave bunny unattended or allow it to lick or ingest the solution.

Saturated stain, let set 15 min. and rinsed with water, let dry. Our rating:

Anna:  5

Absorbine Show Clean Mane & Tail Whitener

*Best bet for really tough stains on white rabbits.

Leaves coat soft, does not tend to dry it out and make it brittle like peroxide.

Did a great job of removing yellow stain.  This is a purple gel solution, and I would suggest diluting it with water and spraying on the stain, then be sure to rinse well.  (I'd be sure not to leave it on too long or you might get a purple bunny!)  Does not specifically claim non-toxicity, so do not leave bunny unattended or allow to ingest the solution.

Applied to stain,  let set 30 min, rinsed and let dry. Our rating:

Anna:  8

Four Paws Crystal Eyes Tear Stain Remover for Dogs

*Best bet for stains on the head and face.

*Overall favorite.

Wow, did a great job removing stain.  Really tough stains may require repeated applications.  Designed to remove stains around the eyes of dogs, advertised safe for use on dogs and cats.  Does not claim non-toxicity, so I would not let the bunny ingest it.

Saturated stain, allowed to set 90 min. Our rating:

Anna:  9

Teresa:  8
