CARE OF THE DOE DURING PREGNANCY

There’s really not too much you’ll need to change from the daily routine of caring for your doe during pregnancy.

Does need little, if any extra feed during gestation.  Make certain that she has plenty of clean, fresh water every day.  We have all our rabbits on daily rations of hay, in addition to their feed.  Just keep an eye on her and watch for anything “out of the ordinary” that might give you reason to believe that something could be wrong.  Keep her in a quiet area where she can stay calm and comfortable.  Usually pregnancy progresses without complication of any kind.

If the doe goes off her feed, consider treating her for fur block.  In addition, a possible complication of pregnancy would be ketosis, although I’ve never seen it or even heard of any of our friends having to deal with it.  It usually occurs in overly fat does, I believe, and treatment consists of giving a little sugar, syrup, or molasses in the water for a few days and extra alfalfa/grass hay to eat.

As early as two weeks before delivery, we have seen some overly anxious does begin to pull fur and collect their daily hay ration in their mouths to go looking for a nesting spot.  If the doe is very intent on pulling her fur out, we often save it for her to be returned to her nest box when she needs it (since by then she’ll be totally bald!).  We don’t give the doe her nest box until day 28 or even day 30, no matter how pathetically they look at us with their “hay cheeks”.  If we did, they might decide that the box is a much nicer place to sit than the wire floor and could develop the habit of lounging in there.   Then they might end up squashing and smothering their babies by sitting on them all the time.
